A History of
the
Grassy Freewill Baptist Church
Grassy Freewill Baptist Church began in 1949 through a series of revivals in the Raccoon-Johns Creek area.  One of these was held in a log house at Meta near the present Meta Baptist Church.  From 1950-52 church was held in the old Grassy School and in an old store building owned by Anthony Thompson.
Bro. Bill Helm and Bro. Jess Mosley helped get the church building started where it is today.  The original lot was donated to the church by Minervia Charles and Butler Charles (both deceased) on the Grassy Fork of Raccoon.
Bro. Mosley laid the block in the original building.  Lumber was purchased from Boone Deskins' lumber mill.  Most labor was done by volunteers.  The first meeting in that building was in 1952.
In the 1960s, Sunday school rooms were added to the back of the church.  Anthony Charles, Bradley Charles, and Anthony Thompson did much of this work.  Other volunteers helped in the completion of the Sunday school rooms.
In the mid 1970s, the church puchased an adjoining 60 foot strip of land from Ruey Kendrick for additional parking and the construction of a kitchen.  Most of the work on the kitchen was done by Dave Charles and his sons.  Some finsihing work was done by volunteers.  The first function held in the kitchen was a wedding reception for Jack and Inis Sue Charles on July 31, 1976, even though the kitchen was not quite finished.
Shortly after the kitchen was built, the church and kitchen were bricked and the parking lot was paved.  It was then that a bapistry was added to the church.
The year 2005 provided another great construction project.  Grassy Freewill Baptist began building a completely new building on the same lot.  The construction was soon completed and the first service held in the new building was Dec. 31, 2005-Jan 1, 2006 Nightwatch service.  The congregation is currently in the process of remodeling the kitchen and adding some extra dining space and storage space.
Many of the original founders of Grassy Freewill Baptist are deceased.  Some of them have relocated and taken membership at other churches.  Maggie Harris and Ellen Smith Ramey are the last charter members of the church.  The Grassy Freewill Baptist Church has about 155 members and hopes to serve the spiritual needs of our community in the future.
