W hat is Octoberfest?
With the start of October we think of harvest time. Farmers on Raccoon knew that summer had ended and fall had arrived, a time to harvest the fields and prepare for winter. They worked all summer in their fields so they could store food for the family to hold them through winter. Octoberfest is a time to thank God for a bountiful harvest. Although many of us now buy our groceries from supermarkets, without God blessing our land, the shelves would be empty.
Johns Creek Chapter 166 of the Disabled American Veterans will host a flag ceremony before the festivities begin.
As part of Octoberfest, we will look back to bygone days as we will display family heirlooms, antiques, and old family portraits. Many items from the farming, timbering, and mining eras will also be shown. Also, both children and adults will be able to participate in many of the favorite games from those days, like musical chairs and sack races.
During the festivities, “Hearts of Faith” will perform many favorite gospel songs, including “I Want to Know How It Feels” and “I Saw the Light.”
Other entertainment will include various games set up around the parking lot, such as apple bobbing and a ring toss. There will also be a Christian washable tattoo table, as well as a craft table. Paul May and his family will perform a skit that is sure to bring laughter to the crowd.
We invite all parents and grandparents to bring their children and grandchildren to Octoberfest. It will be a good way to spend an afternoon with your family.
All of the gospel singing, fun, games, and food will be free. We hope to see you Saturday, October 4 at the parking lot of Grassy Freewill Baptist Church. For more information contact Emery Slone or Brad Williamson.
